Why you won't see me in the GO candidate interviews

Tonight, GO Public Schools Advocates will hold public interviews of Oakland school board candidates in Districts 1 and 5.

I agreed to participate in the interviews as part of the public exchange of ideas, but said that I had reservations about their endorsement.

In recent school board elections, GO has used enormous donations from billionaires as 'independent expenditures' to support their candidates. This practice has drowned out the voices of ordinary people, so I told them that if it will continue, I could not accept their support.

On Friday, GO told me that due to time constraints, and because it would be confusing to include someone who was not seeking their endorsement, I should not attend tomorrow's interview.

I firmly believe that people power can overcome big money even in our current political context, which is why I have been reaching out to families, teachers and school staff across Oakland, and raised funds from over 250 individual donors so far.

I hope you will join me, and please get in touch or attend an upcoming event if you want to know more. My answers to the GO candidate questionnaire, as well as those of the other candidates, are posted on their website.
